What Is a Lease Security Deposit?

A lease security deposit is an amount held by the leasing company to protect against certain unpaid obligations or vehicle-related charges.
Security Deposit in plain English
A security deposit may be required by the lender or selected voluntarily under a special program. Unlike a capitalized-cost reduction, it is generally intended to remain refundable if the customer satisfies the contract.
The deposit is separate from the first payment, registration, acquisition fee, and other amounts due at signing.
A refundable security deposit and a nonrefundable upfront reduction should never be treated as the same kind of money.
What to confirm about a deposit
The contract should clearly explain how the deposit is calculated and returned.
- 1
Deposit amount
Some lenders round the amount based on the monthly payment or use a fixed program amount.
- 2
Refund conditions
Unpaid payments, damage, mileage, or other charges may be deducted.
- 3
Timing of refund
The lender may return the balance after the lease is fully closed.
- 4
Program benefit
A voluntary deposit may sometimes reduce the money factor.
A practical example
A customer may place a $600 security deposit at the beginning of the lease. If the vehicle is returned properly and no balance remains, that deposit may be refunded.
By contrast, a $600 capitalized-cost reduction lowers the payment but is not normally returned at lease end.
Common questions
Is a security deposit always required? No. Requirements vary by lender, credit profile, and program.
Can it be used for the last payment? Usually not unless the lender specifically applies it that way.
Does it earn interest? Most auto lease deposits do not provide an investment return unless the program states otherwise.
Related terms
Continue with multiple security deposits, due at signing and capitalized-cost reduction.
