What Is MSRP on a Car?

MSRP is the manufacturer's suggested retail price for the vehicle and installed factory or port options listed on the window sticker.
MSRP in plain English
MSRP provides a standardized reference price set by the manufacturer. It is not necessarily the amount the dealership paid or the amount the customer will pay.
The final transaction can be below, at, or above MSRP depending on availability, demand, discounts, incentives, and dealer-added products.
MSRP is a reference point, not the complete transaction.
What MSRP helps explain
MSRP is useful when comparing configuration and discount, but it does not include every cost.
- 1
Vehicle configuration
Factory and port options contribute to the sticker price.
- 2
Dealer discount
The discount is often measured from MSRP.
- 3
Lease residual
Residual value is commonly expressed as a percentage of MSRP.
- 4
Market comparison
Similar vehicles should be compared using matching equipment and sticker values.
A practical example
Two vehicles may have the same model name but MSRPs that differ by $8,000 because one includes additional packages and options.
A larger dollar discount on the more expensive vehicle does not necessarily make it the better value.
Common questions
Does MSRP include tax? No. Taxes, registration, and dealership charges are separate.
Is destination included? The window-sticker MSRP commonly includes the manufacturer's destination charge, but presentations should be checked.
Can a dealer sell above MSRP? Depending on law and market conditions, the dealer may add a disclosed market adjustment or products.
