What Is a Lease Mileage Allowance?

A mileage allowance is the maximum number of miles a leased vehicle can be driven under the contract without an excess-mileage charge.
Mileage Allowance in plain English
Mileage allowances are commonly expressed as an annual limit, such as 7,500, 10,000, 12,000, or 15,000 miles per year. The total contractual allowance depends on the selected term.
Higher mileage usually lowers the residual value because the vehicle is expected to be worth less at lease end. That can increase the monthly payment even when the vehicle price stays the same.
The cheapest mileage option is not cheap if it does not match how the vehicle will actually be driven.
How to choose the right allowance
A realistic driving estimate is more valuable than choosing the lowest advertised payment.
- 1
Review current driving
Use recent odometer history rather than guessing from memory.
- 2
Include commute changes
A new job, school schedule, or relocation can materially change annual mileage.
- 3
Add longer trips
Weekend travel, family visits, and seasonal driving should be included.
- 4
Compare the upfront cost
Purchasing additional miles in the original contract may be cheaper than paying excess mileage later.
A practical example
A customer who drives 14,000 miles per year may be attracted to a 10,000-mile lease because the payment is lower. Over a 36-month term, that could create roughly 12,000 excess miles.
Choosing a higher allowance at the start may increase the monthly payment but reduce the risk of a large charge at return.
Common questions
Can I change the mileage later? Some lenders offer mileage-purchase programs, but the terms vary and should not be assumed.
Do unused miles have value? Usually they are not refunded, although low mileage can sometimes improve market value or equity.
Does mileage affect the buyout? The contractual buyout may be fixed, but the vehicle's real market value can be affected by the odometer.
