What Is a Lease Disposition Fee?

A disposition fee is a charge that may be assessed by the leasing company when a vehicle is returned at the end of the lease.
Disposition Fee in plain English
The disposition fee helps cover the lender's cost of processing and preparing the returned vehicle for resale. It is different from charges for excess mileage, excess wear, missing equipment, or unpaid payments.
The amount and any waiver conditions are generally described in the lease contract. Some programs may waive the fee when the customer leases or purchases another eligible vehicle through the same financial brand.
Returning the vehicle cleanly does not always eliminate every lease-end charge.
What to review before maturity
The disposition fee should be considered with the rest of the lease-end statement.
- 1
Contract amount
Confirm the fee listed in the original lease agreement.
- 2
Waiver eligibility
Some loyalty programs may waive the fee when the customer starts another qualifying transaction.
- 3
Other lease-end charges
Mileage and wear charges are separate and may still apply.
- 4
Buyout or trade alternatives
A permitted buyout or trade path may change whether the vehicle is formally returned.
A practical example
A customer may expect to return a vehicle with no balance because the mileage and condition are acceptable. The lender may still assess the contractual disposition fee.
If the customer enters another qualifying lease with the same financial company, the program may waive that fee. The waiver should be confirmed rather than assumed.
Common questions
Is the disposition fee negotiable? It is typically established by the leasing company rather than the returning dealership.
Can a dealer waive it? A dealer may not control the lender's fee, although loyalty programs or transaction credits may offset it.
Is it charged after a buyout? A completed buyout may avoid a normal return disposition, but the lender's rules and other fees should be confirmed.
