What Is APR on a Car Loan?

APR, or annual percentage rate, expresses the yearly cost of borrowing for an auto loan and can include certain finance-related charges.
APR in plain English
APR helps customers compare loan offers using a standardized annual rate. A lower APR generally reduces the finance cost when the amount financed and loan term are the same.
The monthly payment is also affected by the loan amount and term. A long term can produce a lower payment even when the borrower pays substantially more interest over time.
The lowest monthly payment is not always the lowest-cost loan.
What affects an auto-loan APR
The final rate depends on the borrower, lender, vehicle, and transaction.
- 1
Credit profile
Credit history, score, income, and existing obligations can affect approval and pricing.
- 2
Loan term
Longer loans may carry different rates and create more total interest.
- 3
Vehicle age and value
New, used, and high-mileage vehicles may qualify for different programs.
- 4
Lender or manufacturer support
Promotional financing can lower the APR on selected vehicles for qualified customers.
A practical example
Two customers finance the same $45,000 amount for 60 months. One receives 4.9% APR and the other receives 8.9% APR.
The payment and total finance charge will differ materially even though the vehicle price is identical.
Common questions
Is APR the same as the interest rate? APR is designed to reflect the broader annual borrowing cost and may include certain fees.
Can APR be negotiated? A customer can compare lenders and may be able to reduce dealer markup in arranged financing.
Does a down payment lower APR? It can improve the loan structure, but the lender independently sets the approved rate.
